Jackson is my favourite Palace player of all time. Back in the day, England was a goalkeeping factory. He'd be capped if he played now.

Back in those days, never heard him referred to as "Johnnie", always "John". And older members will recall the chant "Aye,aye, aye, aye, Jackson is better than Yashin......"

I actually though the thread was about the Charlton player Johnnie Jackson. So did I. As mentioned earlier, he was surely known as "Jacko" more than Johnny. Some of us are extremely lucky to have seen Vic Rouse, Bill Glazier and Jacko, a triumvirate of 'keepers to be reckoned with. Also, the photo of Jacko celebrating at West Ham is a reminder of the "quality" of pitches back in the day.
The Team (3-5-1-1): John Jackson; Alan Stephenson, John McCormick, Jim Cannon; Don Rogers, Geoff Thomas, Stevie Kember, Michael Hughes, Peter Taylor; Johnny Byrne; Cliff Holton. Subs: Julian Speroni, Kenny Sansom, Bobby Kellard, Ian Wright, Mark Bright, Andrew Johnson, Marouane Chamakh. |

I too remember the Francis lee penalty save. Jackson for me was by far the best and bravest keeper to wear a palace shirt.

Still living up near Harrogate and is not involved profesionally at any club.He told me that the last game he went to was Everton v W.Ham (2-3) and commented that two of his previous clubs are in the FA Cup semi-finals. He really is a nice chap.

Never ever was he referred to as Johnnie..Prior to his long period with Palace Vic Rouse was one of my goalkeeping heros and was one of the first Palace players to be capped when we were in the forth division..playing for wales..He use to get on the 68 bus at Crown point..the bus I use to get when I was a kid from west Norwood..Not many internationals travel to games on public transport these days..Hangeland I believe does but its a rarity in these days of players owning posh expensive cars.
