Full time. Mission accomplished for Tottenham Hotspur, and after all the controversy and shouting about whether Ange, or anybody else, was right or wrong about their views of how to handle the previous game against City, given the potential implications of that game on whether City or Arsenal would win the league, the season ended up surprisingly smoothly in the south Yorkshire sunshine with THFC getting a place in European football whilst Man City did indeed win the Premier league.

In the end there was surely no right or wrong about anybody's view about the Spurs v City game. But if you are the manager of a club, as Ange Postecoglou was/is with Tottenham, it seems inconceivable that you would ever want your players and team to do anything other than win and play their best. At the same time, if your'e a supporter of a side with such an intense rivalry going on, you don't want to gift the other lot with the league championship.

In the circumstances, everybody got what they wanted and THFC finished on a high note. Obviously we wanna do better than consider the Europa league qualification (and Arsenal not winning the title) to be the be and end all of a season, but it's a very decent start. Whether the club has what it takes to go further is for the future, starting right now... even at the season's end. Off to Australia next.

Second half. THFC leading now by three including a scorching finish from Pedro Pollo for #2 (59', Johnson assist) and a second for man of the match Kulu (Kulusevski 65', assist Maddison) after his first half stunner (14', Son assist) from an impressive team build up. Spurs now cruisin' to a Euro spot and by winning they keep matters in their own hands.

First half. Beautifully bagged goal from Kulu, assisted by Son. Against the run of play, but it only takes a moment of magic. Kulu strikes the ball early and the angle is very tight, but it's right on the dime and in it goes.

BBC Football: "If Tottenham avoid defeat today, they will finish fifth in the table and secure a Europa League place."

MAN OF THE MATCH: Dejan Kulusevski. The Swede showed his value for the north London side and surely deserves to be the Spur of the Moment. Great stuff from the 24 yr old talent.

Preview: BBC football "How Spurs & Ars**** fans have mixed emotions over Man City game."

Oh for the golden days of August 2021 and TheSpur's proud headlines read: "Nuno & Son shine" and "Spurs magnificent all over the park". NBC highlights of that game which the Lilywhites won by a goal to nil.

White Hart Lane was in raptures by the end of this spectacular football experience.

Brand new manager Nuno earned his Spurs in his first official game of the season, and it could not have been a tougher or more daunting opponent in moneybags Man City. [For USA/Canada readers who may not know, the earning your spurs idiom means "you show you are capable of doing something well, and can be relied on to do it well in the future."]

Nuno Espirito Santo was famously a thorn in Man City's side even as boss at Wolves, and he did it yet again on this day for the Lilywhites.

Then new Spur Cristian Romero came on late and get a feel for a big Prem game, helping shepherd the final few minutes towards victory.

Our big worry back then? City to come in with a GBP320m bid for both Harry and Son.

City view of that game: "Pep manipulating Sheikhs into releasing another 150m for Kane by deliberately losing to Spurs. Mastermind." -- Guardian reader.

Spurs Odyssey remembers another historic win over Citeh: "This match is being played on the 43rd anniversary of our wonderful 3-2 FA Cup Final win of 1981 over Manchester City. Ricky Villa was seen with Ossie Ardiles at the Womens' Cup Final, and I understand he was also at the Burnley game. Perhaps Ricky will be our half-time guest tomorrow!"
TOTTENHAM TURFIE'S PREDICTION: I predicted a 1-0 victory in that 2021 game, but I've lost my crystal ball for this one.

Full time. US: Peacock, winning goal by van de Ven

Second Half: A second moment of magic as van de Ven cuts inside and with a perfectly placed finish drives wide of the keeper.

Son breaks free on the left and tees up Brennan Johnson who can't tap it in as it goes wide. Son almost scores himself as THFC increase the pressure.

Spurs showing improvement and increased confidence but Burnley only need one of their breaks to translate into a goal. There's a sense that somehow one more goal is on the cards.

Half time:To be continued after the break. Can Spurs break their grim losing streak, or even win?

Other than the Pollo goal Spurs are lacking cohesion at the front and there's no supply line, with Kulu struggling on the left.

First Half: In play. Tottenham Hotspur's Pedro Pollo takes control, surges forward, equalizes for one all and unleashes a magnificent power shot to give Burnley keeper no chance.

Relegation battling Burnley went one up.

Spurs with most of the possession but not making it count. Burnley counter attacking and nicking the first goal from three on three situation.

In play. Relegation battling Burnley one up.

Reactions: 1 win in 30 appearances for Spurs at Anfield. Four losses on the trot for the less than hot Spurs.

Second half: Son from Richarlison and it's #2 for THFC. Angeball is back! You just can't concede so many before getting into gear.

Fourth goal for 'Pool but Richarlison nabs a goal in a move out from the back that gave us a glimpse of the former glories of Angeball.

Third goal for 'Pool. Talksport: "Tottenham are awful." Grim watching on Peacock and elsewhere.

Minor consolation as Villa lost to Brighton.

First half: Second goal for the home side.

Salah scores around the 16th minute and the usual story is unfolding... Spurs in trouble. "Here we go, what the heck was Emerson doing(or not doing)? Why doesn't he play VdV at left back? We need some serious upgrades at fullback this summer, SERIOUS!" asks Confusus on the Fighting Cock forum.

Spurs "living dangerously" as usual playing dubiously out of the back, but also having a go at the Reds.

Preview: BBC Football's Chris Sutton predicts a delightful 2-3 win to the Tottenham. The curse is on then. Interesting BBCF observation that Liverpool v Tottenham has provided six 90th-minute winners (3 each) in the Premier League: "the most of any fixture in the competition's history. Both of the past two league meetings between the two sides have been won courtesy of a 90th-minute winner for the home team."

Spurs Odyssey: "We have won on just two of our last 36 league visits to Anfield, most recently in May 2011."

Spurs Community forum members winner predictions shortly before kick-off: Liverpool 82%, Spurs 14%, Draw 4%.

Chelsea 2
Tottenham Hotspur 0

Spurs continue to struggle with their season run-in, about to get worse with Liverpool, Man City among the clubs left, tho' Burnley and the Blades could be doable.

LWOS preview.

Spurs are 7 points behind Villa in the race for fourth but prior to kick off have played two less games, but the Midlands club are favorites to nab the 4th spot and this is a must win keep the Lilywhites' dream of top 4 in in play.

Cole Palmer is the Chelsea player most likely to do damage for the home side. It's a measure of the depth of Man City's squad and ability to stack talent that even he was deemed surplus gto their requirements, but since moving to the capital he's been ripping the back of the net with a sparkling 20 goals tally for CFC so far.

Tottenham are thinking about bolstering their midfield by signing Chelsea midfield Conor Gallagher but have several other targets for this role.

BBC Football reminds us "Chelsea have lost only one of their past 10 Premier League fixtures versus Spurs (W7, D2)."

WATTV highlighting set pieces as a problem for Spurs and manager says he'll be on the case with that.

Instant reaction: Well major props to Spurs for never capitulating on the field like Chelsea did against this lot. After going three down Tottenham Hotspur still managed to make it a thriller up to the very end. When we get to show that kind of gusto and commitment each and every match we've got an exciting future under our new manager. Real positive despite the loss. Reactions on the way.

Pre match: It's the big one of the year and a challenging time to take on Arsenal who themselves are edging closer to lifting the Prem title.

But we all know it's the north London derby which frequently defies the odds. Everton two games ago beat Liverpool in a derby they never normally win.

"Tottenham, I don't ask for much. You've given me far more pain than joy in the 23 years I've supported you. But if you can just put this crap run of form behind you for one game to pummel this horrible, despicable club into the ground and end their title hopes a week after Harry Kane has knocked them out of the Champions League, I swear I will never be angry with you again." -- Grand Old Team, Fighting Cock forum.

Smiv ate everything at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Thogden's north London derby.

Mr Optimistic: "You could argue that, certainly two weeks ago, Arsenal were the best team in the league. It pains me to say it but they look sharp, they look strong and they score lots of goals. Also, lots of players score the goals for them - they don't rely on any one player. So, it is going to be a very tough afternoon for Tottenham and Arsenal will definitely score - but I am going for us to win" predicts Spurs fan Steve Queralt of Ride on BBC Football.

Arsenal flop at home to scary Villa whom Spurs tonked 4-0 away in March!
Sunday shock for all
The Magpies, with by far the wealthiest owners on the planet, may have been on a snail-like upward curve since their most recent purchase, not helped by an injury crisis, but their supporters know that sooner or later they'd bust through to the elite, and this was one of those games when their potential was on clear display.

Spurs offered little in return other than lots of meaningless possession, which doesn't count for s*** unless all that possession produces at least one goal, and preferably more, like say five!

At least top 4 rivals Manchester Utd got held to a draw at Bournemouth on the same day.

Post match: It's all over. What a second half. Worth the wait, but boy were Spurs getting some flak in that first half from some pundits and "fans" alike. The frustration is understandable but you have to admire those who stick with the plan - overall, the onfield health of the club is remarkably better than it was pre-Ange, even if the health of older supporters' cardiovascular systems may have been adversely affected (and that was before the senior price hike, good to see the Trust and fans spotlighting that).

Second Half: Looks like Tottenham Hotspur will bounce into the Top 4 replacing Villa, and the Lilywhites will have a game in hand. Meanwhile, Man Utd only drew, and it's always good to see Chelscum held at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.

Not be outdone, Pedro Porro uses his shoelaces for a superb third THFC goal, another brilliant combined effort showing the potential of this project can be fulfilled. What a 2nd half turnaround - yet again, a hallmark of this Spurs season.

The team talk and the player changes (lo Celso & Kulusevski replacing Maddison & Werner) brought Tottenham to their full potential which, combined with a spectacular Micky van de Ven blaster after a phenomenally impressive Spurs buildup stemming from a home corner, and life is suddenly good at the Lane.

Half time: Lads, it's Nottingham Forest! Desperately hoping Ange's half time talk does the trick.

First Half: Spurs showing vulnerability at the back - the Angeball flaw. Chris Wood, who got the Forest equalizer, now hits the post.

Visitors equalize. Commentator blames van de Ven, another pundit blames Udogie. BBC Football: "Anthony Elanga cuts the ball back to Chris Wood and it reaches the Kiwi via a deflection off the sliding Cristian Romero ... that deflection takes the pace off it a bit and does Wood a favour as he can just slot the ball home. Good finish."

Own goal by Santiago Costa dos Santos, the Forest problems created by the build-up involving Son and Werner. Spurs looking more rapid with the Angelball one and two touches. Elsewhere: MAnUre only got a point home to Liverpool. Sheff Utd have equalized against Chelscum.

Lilywhites line-up: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Bissouma, Maddison; Johnson, Son, Werner.

SPUR of the Moment: On a day when defenders excelled (and scored), flashback Joe Kinnear RIP. Multiple trophy winner as THFC defender.

LWOS reaction.

Spammers reaction from Claret & Booze.

BBC Football: "Their [THFC's] fifth-minute opener came after their previous 12 league goals were all scored in the second halves of matches."

TheSpur's instant reaction: It's a draw. Tottenham Hotspur dominated possession but it was 'Angeball Light', perhaps a more pragmatic version of the real thing now that the Spurs manager has maybe grasped that it's not all about throwing the kitchen sink at the opposition when #1 he doesn't have the full quota of players yet who can consistently play the style and speed he seeks including dazzling one touch stuff that lit up the early season for a while, and #2 the Premier league has far more formidable opposition than he would ever encounter at the helm of Celtic or Brisbane Roar. Just a theory.

Second Half saw Spurs mostly in control but unable to create that many real chances.

Half time 1:1.

Spurs amatuerishly fail to defend a corner allowing West Ham's Kurt Zouma a free header into goal.

Very early goal from Brennan Johnson, skillful assist from Timo Werner, both players in form and raring to go as Spurs enjoy the lead after just five minutes.

THFC were not at the races. Yes we thrashed fatigued Euro playing Villa at their place (Villa going on to draw 1:1 at West Ham plus we have a game in hand) but then Spurs barely show up at lower rated Fulham, who, to be fair, were lively throughout and playing confident football with an in-form striker.

They had taken the time and made the effort to study the Spurs method and the players to look for effective ways to set up. Whereas Villa failed to find an antidote to Angeball, savvy FFC Portuguese manager Marco Silva did his homework and his players executed.

Other sites go into more specifics so here are some of them with more links in the left column to supporter based sites with their reactions.

"An embarrassing performance" said WATTV.

2nd Half: turned into a capitulation and a death-knell third goal. The second half revival of THFC that we've seen before this season never materialized.

Fulham score early after the interval. This would take some comeback.

Half time: Fulham score late first half. Spurs had one shot on target 1st half. Will the pattern continue - Ange half time talk - Spurs bounce back 2nd half? Or will that pattern be broken.

Reverse fixture: Spurs started strong, Fulham found their footing, but ultimately it was the blend of Angeball and the world class talent of one of the players, in this case a South Korean international forward of some repute, that was the difference between the two capital sides.

Spur of the Moment for that game: Son Heung-min scores, assists, captains, playes intelligently and with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Among other talents.

Reactions: LWOS reaction.

Spurstalkshow. "As delighted and happy as I am, I have to say I'm worried about Mickey[vdV] and his apparent hamstring injury." -- jeffstevens, viewer.

WATTV reaction: mature display, showing the growth of where we're at.

TheSpur reaction: It's astonishing how Spurs have recently been turning things around after the half time break, and this was another dramatic example.

Villa relied too heavily on the long ball, especially to Ollie Watkins, one of THFC's nightmare opponents, but the home side paid a price for that, it didn't work this time.

Spurs rose head and shoulders above the hosts in every department during the second half and in the end the vistors boasted a match total of around 67% of possession.

More reactions coming soon as Tottenham, with a game in hand, get within two points of 4th place Villa.

Second half: Son cutting back to Timo Werner and it's #4 for Spurs. Fans chant his name and he's bang on form - THFC have now overtaken their hosts in goal difference. Dramatic turnaround in fortunes just as Villa were poised to cement a top four finish.
Sarr is the most underrated midfielder in the league
agpbud, Guardian reader

Kulu is involved in so much, this time a quick passing exchange with Porro leads to him setting up Heung-min Son for a clinical third Tottenham goal, a goal and two assists for the South Korean international. #3 as Spurs, after a poor first half, are dominating this 2nd half.

Visiting fans: "Are you West Ham in disguise?" as Hammers, wearing the same kit colours and design, were at home trailing relegation bound Burnley (ending in a 2:2 draw).

Villa captain John McGinn assaults Udogie and sent off.

Goal #2. Kulu steals the ball to feed Son who outsteps the delivery for Brennan Johnson who gives the Villa keeper no chance. Three and a half minutes after the first, Spurs now two up and only two points below Villa and a match in hand in the race for fourth place and a champs league spot.

Goal #1: Kulu breaking from the back and finds Pape Matar Sarr on the right, his silver platter cross to Maddison allows our in-form striker to stab the ball into the net. First effort on target and Lilywhites lead.

First half: Aston Villa seemed fatigued from Ajax, playing five at the back. Spurs unable to create meaningful possibilities, with Villa creating three or four credible first half scoring chances.
